Cat among those rescued by RACQ chopper from yacht

RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter has rescued two men and a cat, after the yacht they were sailing on ran into trouble on Sunday night.

The men and their ginger feline shipmate, a cat named Soy Boy, were attempting to sail from Yeppoon to Geelong in Victoria but only got as far as the Fraser Coast before one of the yacht’s sails tore.

After the motor failed to start, the crew dropped anchor but big swell, which was an estimated 8-10 feet, damaged the rope attached to the vessel.

RACQ LifeFlight Rescue air crew officer, Shayne White, said when the helicopter arrived conditions were too dangerous to do a winch in the dark.

“We decided to leave the light on them as the boat washed into the beach and just kept in communication via radio,” Mr White said.

The chopper landed nearby for the rescue, and liberated Soy Boy – who’d spent the tumultuous few hours securely locked away in the yacht’s glove box.
