Busy roads to frustrate travellers

The State’s peak motoring body has reminded drivers to allow extra travel time when they headed home from their summer holidays as thousands of families were expected to hit the highway.

Traffic on the Pacific Highway at Mudgeeraba

RACQ spokesperson Clare Hunter said congestion was expected southbound along the Bruce Highway between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane, and northbound on the Pacific Motorway between the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

“For many Queenslanders, today spells the end of their Summer holiday and no one wants to end the break with a stressful trip in traffic,” Ms Hunter said.

“We know thousands of families are expected to hit the road which’ll see an increase in traffic so remember to pack your patience for the drive home.

“Plan your trip ahead of time using our RACQ Road Conditions website, and consider staggering your journey to either get away first thing in the morning, or after dinner, to avoid the congestion.”

Ms Hunter said traffic would also increase inbound to the Brisbane CBD as people returned to work on Monday.

“If you’re unlucky enough to have been working over the Christmas period you might be used to a dream run into town, but that’ll change tomorrow when the rest of the workforce returns,” she said.

“Buses and trains may be a little slower than they have been over the last fortnight because they’ll be busier, so if you’re on public transport keep that in mind too.”
