Quest Newspapers reported Council would consider replacing three slip lanes located at Brisbane CBD, Sunnybank and Coorparoo with controlled left turns.
Other options being considered included signalising the slip lane, installing a zebra crossing or redesigning the slip lane to reduce the crossing width and reducing vehicle speed.
RACQ Head of Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said the Club looked forward to seeing the detailed report along with the underlying data which underpinned the proposed treatments under the Move Safe Brisbane initiatives.
“We’d welcome the opportunity to work with Council on selecting the most appropriate treatments at each location, including other options to improve safety in and around these intersections,” Mr Spalding said.
“Slip lanes can be a problem for pedestrian safety. The current road rule is vehicles must give way to a pedestrian on a slip lane.
“This means the onus is still on the pedestrian to cross the slip lane when it’s safe to do so. To make it safer, Council could consider installing a zebra crossing, or a ‘wombat’ crossing, which is a raised zebra crossing platform, on the slip lane as an effective and relatively low-cost solution.”
Mr Spalding reminded pedestrians to take responsibility for their own safety near roads.
“If you’re crossing the road, make sure you’re giving it your full attention, so avoid using your phone and only cross in safe locations.”
