Increased tram use to ease congestion

The State’s peak motoring body has welcomed news Gold Coast residents and visitors to major events were getting on board the light rail system.

The Gold Coast Bulletin reported light rail patronage had jumped to almost a million passengers a month since the opening of stage two, from the Gold Coast University Hospital to Helensvale rail station, last December.

RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said this would help ease congestion on Gold Coast roads.

“The next stage from Broadbeach to Burleigh, once delivered, will build on this providing access for many more people to use public transport,” Ms Ross said.

“It’ll also allow for bus network reform to fill in more gaps in the outer areas of the Gold Coast public transport network to feed into light rail services.

“Making sure people can drive, walk, cycle and catch other public transport to and from G:Link stations will also be critical to see continued patronage growth.”
