Tradies warned: ute car seat covers recalled

The State’s peak motoring body has issued an urgent warning to drivers who owned a Toyota Hilux or Toyota Rav 4 to check their vehicles after some aftermarket seat covers were found to be defective.

The ‘Tradies Custom Fit’ front seat covers or ‘Sperling Made to Order’ front seat covers sold at Autobarn, Auto One and other specialty retailers between April 2015 and April 2018 might prevent the in-seat airbag from deploying correctly.

RACQ’s Principal Technical Researcher Russell Manning said the issue presented a serious risk to drivers in the event of a crash.

“Airbags are designed to deploy in a particular manner.  If the seat cover restrains or alters the way the bag deploys, their safety benefits can be significantly reduced, or worse, they could produce unexpected consequences for the occupants,” Mr Manning said.

Mr Manning said identifying accessory items such as seat covers could be difficult for owners.

“Such products may not carry readily visible branding and, as in this case, they can be sold under a number of different brands by a number of different retailers,” he said.

“If you have any doubts about whether your seat covers are involved we recommend contacting Sperling Enterprises for guidance.”

Mr Manning said it was important drivers acted now, so that the car could be made safe again if necessary.

“If your seat covers are affected, or you aren’t sure, you should immediately remove them and contact the manufacturer for assistance.”
