Data* obtained by the Club showed more fines were handed out at a Gold Coast location than anywhere else, with more than 1600 offences at the Gold Coast Highway and Margaret Avenue intersection at Broadbeach.
RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie said it was mind boggling that on average more than 82 red light camera offences were being committed each day.
“Running a red light is simply inexcusable and can have serious consequences for all road users at an intersection,” Ms Ritchie said.
“It’s a complete disregard for road safety and there’s no reason to take an unnecessary risk.
“Too many motorists are choosing to run a yellow light to gain a few extra seconds, and with more than 150 lives already lost on Queensland roads this year, motorists need to change this behaviour.
“Yellow means stop if it’s safe to do so, not go faster.”
Ms Ritchie said red light infringements could have been much higher at Macgregor, had changes not been made to signals at the Kessels Road and Mains Road intersection.
“Working closely with Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) we advocated for the green time for the right turn from Kessels Road on to Mains Road to be extended and this reduced the number of offences by more than half,” she said.
“We’re keen to hear from our members about any intersections around the State so we can work with DTMR to make further improvements to road infrastructure.”
Ms Ritchie said she was also concerned at the high number of red light camera offences at Main Street and Vulture Street at Kangaroo Point in Brisbane, where there were 1214 infringement notices recorded.
